How to Get Paid While Unemployed

Losing your job is an emotional, scary event. You might be worried about how you’re going to pay your bills or buy your groceries while you search for another position. But as long as you meet certain conditions, you might be eligible for unemployment benefits to assist you while you job hunt. There are also other ways to earn extra income while unemployed. Ready to find out how?

Between jobs? Loans for Unemployed people

If you have another full-time job in sight, securing a loan in the meantime can help as a bridge between pay checks.

Short term loans. Good no job loans. Repayment period between 15 days up to 1 year. Faster and easier but more expensive when personal loans

Long term loans – Personal loans

Unemployment Eligibility

When you’re let go from your job, the first thing you should do is apply for unemployment benefits. You might have to go through a waiting period, so the sooner you apply, the better. The most important eligibility requirement for receiving unemployment is that you were let go through no fault of your own.

Perhaps your company had budget issues or completely closed down your location. You can’t, however, receive unemployment benefits if you quit your job or were fired because of gross misconduct. After this basic requirement, each state has its own individual standards based on how long you worked there and how much money you earned.

Benefits of Receiving Unemployment

So, what exactly do you receive while on unemployment? You can actually get a lot of help from this program, though again, the exact numbers vary by state. Typically, you’ll receive a portion of your previous wages, most commonly up to half of what you earned at your old job. Most states place a maximum on how much you can receive each week, so if you were in a higher-paying job, you might receive less than half of your former salary.

What else do you need to know about receiving unemployment benefits?

  • You might get extra money for dependents
  • You must pay taxes on your unemployment income
  • Your benefits might decrease if you find other methods of income
  • Your benefits of course end when you find another job

Other Ways to Get Paid

Even if you haven’t found another full-time job yet, there are ways to supplement your unemployment income. Just remember that earning money through part-time jobs may reduce your benefits.

Here are some alternative ways to make money while job hunting:

  • Become an Uber or Lyft driver
  • Sign up to participate in research studies and focus groups
  • Tutor students or adults
  • Sell your excess stuff
  • Rent out a room on Craigslist or AirBnB

Get creative and tap into your local community to provide a service that is truly needed. By then, you’ll hopefully have had enough time to successfully find another job within your industry.
