The importance of self-esteem at a job interview

Being interviewed for a job is a challenging experience for almost everyone. A job interview involves selling your merits and being judged by people in a position of authority. Your professional growth and financial future may be affected, especially if you have been unemployed or underemployed for some time.

It’s important to approach the job interview with a feeling of self-esteem. This article looks at how bringing an attitude of self-esteem to a job interview will benefit both you and the company which is hiring, and detail ways to present yourself with increased confidence.

Benefits to you

When you approach a job interview, you will be much more relaxed if you have a sense of self-esteem. Your thinking will be clear, and you will be in a position to present your past accomplishments and your qualifications for the position at hand in a compelling manner.

If you are faced with an unexpected question, even one to which you do not know the answer, you will be able to deal with it calmly and rationally. Should the question of salary come up, you will be confident in your own self-worth and comfortable asking for an amount that you deserve. Whether or not you are eventually hired for the position, you will continue to believe in yourself and your abilities.

Benefits to the Interviewer

The team or individual interviewing you also benefits from your self-esteem. They will be able to cut to the chase, asking relevant questions and receiving straight answers. You will save them time by your readiness to show how you can contribute to the business. Faced with your confident demeanor, they will be better able to assess how your personality would fit with the company style.

Remember, interviewers have a difficult task to accomplish – choosing the best candidate for the position and for the company as a whole – and often have been allotted a limited time in which to do so.

Increasing Self-Esteem in a Job Interview Setting

Here are a number of ways to prepare yourself and face a job interview with self-esteem:

  •  Appreciate. Acknowledge to yourself that the very fact you have been selected for an interview is already a positive sign.
  •  Prepare. You glanced at the company’s website before submitting your application. Now go back and read it thoroughly. Gather information about what they do, but also how and why they do it.
  •  Inventory. Decide how your skills mesh with the company’s goals and can help them to advance.
  •  Dress. This is not new advice, but dressing the part will create a positive first impression and boost your self-esteem.
  •  Relax. The interviewer is there to get to know you in a business context, not to interrogate you.
  •  Be honest. If you don’t know the answer to a question, ask for more information in a way that shows you are ready to learn.
  •  Be positive. Focus on what you’ve accomplished and what you have to offer.
