Earn extra money online

Let’s face it. Just about everyone could use a little extra cash. And taking an additional job may be difficult, especially if you have an erratic schedule or limited mobility. Earning extra money online is an appealing option, whether you are a student, a stay at home parent, a senior or just someone who wants to increase their income.

Popup ads offering you the opportunity to earn tens of thousands of dollars per week stuffing envelopes or requesting a registration fee to find out about job openings are obvious scams to beware of. But what are some legitimate ways to earn money online? Here are six of the best.

  1. Sell your unwanted items. If you have closets full of stuff taking up space in your house or apartment, try selling the items on sites like e-Bay. Generally you’ll have to create an account and set up a way for customers to pay you remotely. A fringe benefit is that you’ll reduce the clutter in your home environment.
  2. Or sell your crafts (jewelry, quilts, hand knit sweaters and more) at Etsy or similar crafty sites. Note that there is a fee to list your handiwork, and a commission on actual sales.
  3. Take surveys. There are a number of sites on the Internet that act as matchmakers for companies or institutions that need people to answer surveys and folks who are ready to give their opinion on just about any subject under the sun. Register with a few of these sites and receive invitations to fill out all kinds of questionnaires for pay.
  4. Upload your photographs. List your best camera work on stock photography sites like ShutterStock or iStockphoto where people come looking for images to buy for websites, company newsletters and so on. You might need to invest in a good camera, as pictures should be of high quality. Avoid posting pix of copyright images or brand names, or using faces without a model release. Aside from that, just about anything salable for commercial use goes. This is a great way to turn a hobby into a profitable sideline.
  5. Become an affiliate. Choose a popular company that offers an affiliate program to work with. Set up a website or blog for free or at minimal expense. Load it up with pages of interesting and informative content which describes the company’s product or services. Link your visitors to the parent site, and you’ll receive a percentage of however much they end up spending there.
  6. Tutor. If you are an expert at a certain subject – or know enough about it to teach – you can tutor remotely. Tutoring websites contract with teachers to offer remote private lessons in English, math, science and social studies to high school students or adults. (Most sites require a university degree.)
