Tips for a healthier lifestyle regardless of your finances

Can’t afford to join a gym or buy the latest dietary supplements? Many people are feeling a financial squeeze these days, but that’s no reason to compromise your health. There are plenty of ways to lead a healthier lifestyle no matter what your budget may be.

All you need is some creative thinking, a “can do” attitude and the willingness to make a few changes in your daily routine – particularly in the areas of diet, physical activity and habits. Here is a list of some suggested tips to get you started.

Improve your Diet

  • Eat more slowly. It is said that one of the best forms of exercise is putting down your fork. This means relaxing between bites, noticing what you are eating and stopping when you are just comfortably full.
  • Snack on healthy treats. If you – or your children – want a pick me up between meals, try substituting fresh vegetable sticks for the crunch of potato chips or fruit for the sweetness of a candy bar. You may find this actually saves money on your snack food bills.

Hydrate yourself.

  • Drink plenty of (free) water. Not only will it keep you hydrated and energetic, it will also take away those food cravings that are actually thirst in disguise.
  • Switch to whole grains. Whole wheat pasta, for example, is just as tasty as regular, perhaps even more so, and it’s an easy, inexpensive way to get a little extra nutrition into your meal.

Get Moving

  • Move up. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator to your workplace in the morning will let you start the day with an extra burst of energy.
  • Move around. If you have a sedentary job, get up and walk around every hour or so. Or do some simple exercises right at your desk. This is great for the circulation and the concentration.
  • Make exercise fun. Explore your local park on your day off for a great, free way to get into shape. Alternatively, it won’t break the bank to buy a jump rope and get hopping.



  • Get your beauty rest. Fortunately, sleep is still free, so try to get the recommended eight hours per night.
  • Quit smoking. Please. Save the price of cigarettes and quite possibly your life.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. Over indulgence in alcohol is costly, bad for your liver and likely to involve you in an accident.
  • Turn off the TV. Unplugging your electronic devices and heading out into the sunshine will increase your body’s production of Vitamin D.
  • De-stress. Worrying is bad for your immune system, so find an alternative. Meditation is a great way to relax.
  • Smile. A positive attitude is another great de-stressor. And it’s contagious … in a good way.
