The importance of stress relief

Stress is a part of your make up as a human being. When faced with a situation that appears dangerous, your body goes into “red alert” mode. Also known as the “fight or flight” reaction, this refers to the rush of adrenaline that floods the system as you instinctively prepare for action of one kind or another. This is useful and even necessary should you find yourself in the path of a runaway lion or a speeding train. But in everyday life, too much stress can be harmful.

Stress Overload
Many people tend to over-interpret challenging situations as potentially dangerous. This is especially true when they are hungry, tired or emotionally depleted. Driving in heavy traffic, an argument with one’s spouse or a difficult day at work – all of these may cause an overload of stress. If they occur on a regular basis, it is bad news.

Effects of Stress
Repeated or chronic stress affects the body, mind and emotions. It can cause physical disease ranging from relatively minor problems such as migraine or indigestion all the way to heart attack, stroke or ulcer. Stress induced psychological difficulties include irritability, problems of concentration and memory, anxiety, depression and panic attacks. The effects of stress on the emotions are potentially crippling; those that involve the body may be fatal.

Ways to Relieve Stress
It’s obvious that stress is a very serious problem. Fortunately, there are effective ways to relieve stress, which will benefit the person as a whole in terms of physical and mental health. These can be broken down into three categories – solutions that deal with stressful occurrences, remedies that focus on one’s perception or interpretation of situations as stressful and general relaxation techniques.

Stress Removal
Sometimes relieving stress involves a very simple change in your lifestyle. If highway driving in rush hour means that you arrive home a bundle of nerves, you might try going by a different route. Motoring along back roads might take a little longer, but it’s worth it if you come back to your family relaxed and cheerful.

Change your Perceptions
Another way to cope is by changing your perception of a given situation or even of life as a whole. Relaxation techniques, breathing and meditation can all transform your mood from stressed to serene, although nothing in the outside world has changed. When faced with a difficult person, for example, you can try breathing out negativity – letting it go completely – and breathing in calm. Don’t forget to smile!

For Further Relaxation
Further relaxation techniques can head off stress before it even has a chance to start. Regular exercise is one, because it stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals which dull the body’s perception of negative feelings and create a feeling of well-being. Therapeutic massage is another. Mind body techniques such as yoga or chi gong are also excellent long term stress relievers.
